For about two weeks, I traveled all over the East Coast... At least, it felt that way. My reason for going in the first place was for work. Since I was getting a paid trip to and from the East Coast, and I had some free time after my job was over (the one great thing about freelancing), I thought I might as well shell out a few more bucks and visit some old friends who had relocated out there, most of whom I haven't seen in a good while. And thus began Jean's 2008 East Coast Tour.

East Coast Tour 2008: In Transit

Washington, D.C., & Various In-Between Places

November 1-2, 2008

Washington, D.C., Union Station
When I was planning my trip, I decided I'd visit my brother in Chicago while I was out this way. For kicks (and financial reasons), I chose to take Amtrak from New York to Chicago. I thought it would be a good chance to take the scenic route and travel by train (which I had only done once before, but on a much shorter trip - this one took about a day). The trip I chose had a 4-hour layover in Washington, D.C. I took that opportunity to visit a couple of my friends who had relocated there recently.
Chris and Erika give me a quick tour of our nation's capitol.
I first met Chris and Erika while we were all in film school. It has already been close to 5 years... How time flies! Anyway, so why are they in D.C.??? Good question!!! Haha! Just kidding. Apparently, law school was something that was always in the back of Chris's mind (when he applied to film school, he had also applied and was accepted to a law school, but he chose to do film at the time). Chris is currently in his first year at Georgetown Law, and Erika (his then-girlfriend, now wife) is there with him for moral support. ;-) Just kidding!

The White House, with the Washington Monument in the background.
Harpers Ferry, WV
The visit with Chris and Erika was too short, but I was still glad to see them. Here I am, back on the train. One of the first stops after leaving D.C. was Harpers Ferry, WV. This picture does not do this idyllic, picturesque town justice. One glimpse, and I was absolutely taken by this place! At first, I sort of questioned my desire to visit Harpers Ferry (a small town out in the middle of West Virginia... Hmm...). However, upon learning its history, it has definitely become a place I'd like to visit in the near future.

In-between Places...
As much as I loved riding the train, and as much as I loved being able to see "small town America", I really can't recommend taking a trip on the train that takes longer than a day... At least not without having one of those private sleeping rooms. Don't get me wrong. The seats on the train are nice and big and comfy. Even though you sit in pairs, there's plenty of room for you to maintain some personal space from the person sitting next to you (I didn't even notice my neighbor had Tourette's, or something like it, until the end of my trip). However, even though you can walk around on the train, you're still sort of confined to a seat for most of the trip. And let me tell you (even those of you who fly out to Asia or a similarly distant location on a semi-regular basis) - being confined to a seat for close to 20 hours is no joke!
